El hierro y el magnesio que componen la bengala (son los que producen las chispas) rompen la molécula de agua en hidrógeno y oxígeno. El hidrógeno cuando alcanza la superficie puede quemarse y producir una llama como se aprecia en el vídeo.
El recipiente tiene que ser capaz de soportar altas temperaturas, el vidrio normal podría estallar.
