How do fluorescent lamps work?

To understand how fluorescent lamps work we first have to talk about how materials can emit light. Every atom in a molecule has specific energy levels which are the only ones where electrons can exist. Atoms can absorb energy from many sources in many ways. In some of the cases, if it is a lot of absorption in the hop from one energy level to a higher one its electrons tend to return to a lower level. The hop to a lower level is accompanied by emission of the photon, the light particle, this is what is called fluorescent light emission.

There are lamps like neon lamps which simply emit the light that it is created in the gas inside but in fluorescent lighting it is not the end of the story, if the light created in a fluorescent lamp is UV we can’t see the light directly but if it is phosphorescent material, as the one fluorescent lamp interior is covered with, the phosphorescent material will absorb this energy and will emit part of it using the same fluorescent process we talked about earlier as emission light photons. This light emitted by the phosphorescent material is the fluorescent lamp lighting.
